It was essentially a direct port released less than a year after the original. It didn't add much value to the game, that's why. But I still think it's the best Sonic game we've had and honestly, I think it's a damn shame we've had nothing like it since. I don't see Nintendo fans crying over being able to play as Luigi - hell, they celebrate it.Īll that being said, is Adventure 2 a "perfect" game? No, I can name a couple flaws (the camera, the audio mix). 1991 was 24 years ago, a lot's changed in that time. If I wantedto play a Sonic-only game, I'd fire up Sonic 1. "But I'm not playing as Sonic :(" Oh please go play Sonic 3&K as Tails/Knuckles and then say a game can't be based around different styles of gameplay. I guess if you didn't like Tails'/Knuckles' gameplay, I could see where you're coming from, but as stated, I liked those styles as well, so I wasn't bothered. I won't let him down, I won't give up!") Maybe if the player had a little more control (kind of like Sonic Heroes, minus the whole "formations" jazz), it'd probably be a lot better, but what we had (it was 2001, we didn't have the capabilities) was perfectly fine with me. "But in this level I play as Tails then Knuckles then Tails then Tails." Maybe the mystery of who will be played as next is just as enjoyable for some: remember, you're playing the Hero/Dark story, not Sonic's/Shadow's story (if anything the two Adventure titles are more based around Tails' character development: at the start of Adventure 1, he's just a sidekick living in Sonic's shadow by the end of Adventure 2, he's able to stand up for himself and fight on his own - "Sonic asked me for the first time do something for him. I guess, but given the context of the situation, it'll do. Frankly, it didn't bother me at all: I was playing as Tails, that was enough for 12-year-old me. "But Tails is in a mech, wutupwitdat?" Be thankful he's playable at all: he originally wasn't going to be until the fans cried out against it by that point, the devs had no choice but to make him an Eggman clone. Sure, by patching one hole, the devs made another, but at least they patched up that one too. Plus, you get three hints with each Emerald Shard could you imagine getting one for each at the same time? You'd be even more lost. Again: four distinct areas, three Emerald Shards. Find them out of order and you get way more points. "But you can only look for them one at a time unlike in Adventure 1!" Yeah, if you're using the hint system. Each of those levels have four distinct areas and there's an Emerald Shard in three of them, you'll find them eventually. "Oh, but what about the hint system in Knux/Rouge? How can you be expected to know the layout of the level?" Let's be real here the levels aren't that big. Adventure 2 fixed it by having each level centered on the three different styles: Sonic's/Shadow's were based on high-speed platforming, Tails'/Eggman's were built around slower mech-shooting, and Knuckles'/Rouge's were built around treasure hunting. My main complaint with Adventure 1 was that the levels weren't built around all six characters, instead built around Sonic with the others as an afterthought. Have to disagree on the whole "1/3" thing, since I personally enjoyed all three types of gameplay, not to mention it fixed a lot of issues I had with Adventure 1 (which I actually played after Adventure 2):
